Car park fight!

Wow. What a crazy day so far.

Today Matt had to do the final patent lodgement (yes he has an invention and is lodging a patent but I'll write about that someday in future when it's all more solid) so there was plenty of stress and rushing around to get things double checked and printed before the post office closed at noon. At this stage it was about 15 minutes until the post office would have closed.

He was about to drive off to the post office which is in a giant shopping centre when I realised that the Christmas parking would be crazy so I offered to drive him and wait in the car to save him having to find a park. It turned out to be a VERY clever idea because as we approached the shopping centre you could see that about 3 blocks from the shopping centre every street was solid with parked cars.

We drove into the car park and I was waiting in the car for Matt. I saw this guy waiting for this other guy's park and when the parked guy drove off this other jerk backed into his park and stole it. It was painfully obvious that the first guy had been waiting for the park. Anyway, the first guy gets out of the car and yells at the jerk who stole his park. The Jerk gets out of his car... there is more yelling and then the jerk HEADBUTTS the first guy. o_O I don't think he hit him too hard cause the first guy backed away but still.. WHAT A PSYCHO!!!

There was a bit of a scuffle but the first guy sort of backed off. There was a lot of yelling. Then I had to move my car and missed what happened next.

Eventually shopping centre security came out and the police were called. I drove back around cause I was still waiting for Matt and I told them I'd seen it all. They got my witness statement. Even though heaps of other people had seen it happen I guess I was the only one still there.

I guess it's good that there will be some kind of justice but at the end of the day all I have to say is...

WHAT THE HELL IS WRONG WITH PEOPLE?!!

If getting a park to get your last minute Christmas presents is worth assaulting someone for then what the hell does that say about what Christmas has become?

People need to CHILL OUT!

I'm also really glad I drove Matt because maybe if I hadn't he could have been the one who had his park stolen. He was already rather stressed about patent lodging.

It would not have been good. lol

Yay!!!

Mona ([info]_smashing_mona_) invited us to have Christmas dinner with her and her family and Greg tomorrow night!!! YAY!!! Greg is Mona's boyfriend who has come to visit her from the US... after so many years online! I'm so happy for you guys!

And we are having turkey!! YUM!!!

Also yesterday I went and put my wedding dress design in and also an order for some custom white wedding boots. Both should be finished sometime in the next 2 weeks!!! YAY! Thanks so much Carolin ([info]lobolita) for helping translate everything that was going on!

Then Carolin, her boyfriend Juan, me and Matt went out to El Naturista a yummy vegetarian restaurant.... and then Club Cultura Alternativa which was really cool. They make great pisco sours too. :D

Walking home... )

Matt picked one for me ...awww. ^_^

So many police... with wacking sticks!! lol
If the videos aren't working you may need to download the DivXCodec.

So after our Christmas dinner at Mona's place tomorrow night then on Christmas day we will cook our own chicken and vegetable roast... and then that night we are going to have drinks at another friends house. It's going to be a great Christmas! ^_^

Tonight we are going to Blondie. Anyone else going? We realised we have to make the most of it before we go back to Australia since there are not clubs like that in Brisbane.

OMG we got tear gassed!!! :O

On September 11th here in Santiago (the anniversary of the day Pinochet seized power back in 1973) there were a lot of protests in the street. So of course Matt wanted to go out and see the action. Reluctantly, after the smoke inhalation fiasco, I agreed to go for a walk through the city.

The police had their scary vehicles sitting around waiting for action, but other than that the streets were very quiet.

September 11th fiasco... )

Yay... totally recovered from the day's fiasco!

The end of another crazy day living with Matt. *collapses with exhaustion*

EARTHQUAKE!!

OMG I forgot to mention... that a few nights ago there was an EARTHQUAKE!!! Ok so it was more like a tremor... but it was AWESOME!!

In the middle of the night I woke up and I heard the door latch click... it sounded like someone had opened the bedroom door... needless to say I was like 'What the!?' and then there were some noises from the other room (well they seemed to be from the other room but really I think they were deep rumbly earthy type noises) and I thought there was someone in our apartment!!

But then the whole building swayed back and forth (just enough to know it was happening) a few times and just as quickly as it had started it stopped. Then I was so wide awake and excited! hahaha It was so amazing and humbling to think that the earth could just move like that enough to make my big strong concrete building (which seems so solid and secure) sway back and forth so effortlessly!

We are on the 11th floor... so I imagine the swaying would have been even more awesome on the top floor (24th floor)!

Ooh spooky alien fun with maids!! lol

Ok... you guys all totally have to go here and listen to the "Eerie Sounds of Saturn's Radio Emissions" recorded by NASA.

Matt discovered this last night and we keep listening to it cause it is creepy and cool. It totally sounds like something from a 60s science fiction movie!!

Anyway... after finishing my first pair of bright red curtains... we opened the bedroom door this morning to find the living room aglow with red light coming through the closed curtains. When the maids got here to clean (we often leave the bedroom door shut and just let them do the living room and kitchen) we thought they might think the glowing red light unusual.

Then Matt decides to play Saturn's recorded radio emissions on repeat, at full volume... to give the maids a soundtrack to clean by. lol So we're sitting here snickering, with him directing his computer speakers towards the door and these howling alien sounds screeching their way out into the living room while they clean the apartment amidst the glowing red light. We are such dorks... and I can't even begin to think what they think of us!! hahahaha We have really only spoken a few words to them cause we don't speak Spanish and they don't speak English.

One thing is for sure.... we've gotta be giving gringos a weird reputation! hahaha   ...I guess at least this job is a little more interesting for them! lol

PS - I think there really could no be a better post to introduce my new 'Matt's brain being fried' icon to the world. hahahah

FIRE!

The night before last there was a fire in our building!

It was about 1am or maybe 1.30 am... of course we were still awake. We were actually about to start watching a DVD... when we heard the fire alarm go off. It happened one other day too so we thought it was just another false alarm, maybe some kid set it off or something. After a while it stopped and we thought we were right. It went off a couple more times and we though... ok maybe this is for real or at least we'll have to leave the building. We looked out the window and saw someone running from our building to the other building frantically. Other people in other apartments were also peering out of their windows.

Still we thought it was probably just a false alarm, until we opened the window and smelt smoke. I stuck my head out and saw heaps of smoke pouring out from the side of the building. It sort of looked like it was coming from the building site next door (which is actually part of our lot... it's the third building they are putting up).

So we grabbed our jackets and left the apartment. Of course we had to go down the stairs and there were people frantically coming down the flights of stairs... some guy shouted something at us in Spanish (probably asking us what was going on). We had to say we didn't understand and just keep moving. As we got closer to the bottom levels of the building the smoke got thicker and it was pretty scary. Thankfully there was only one more lot of stairs and then we were out of the building.
Lots more smoke... )

Our New Apartment...

After our dramas at the boarding house we found an organisation called Contact Chile (http://www.contactchile.cl) who helped us find a fully furnished apartment that rents by the month (which gives us awesome freedom). The rent is $300,000 pesos a month (AU$150 a week) and it includes furniture, cutlery and crockery etc, electricity and gas and a daily maid service including daily fresh towels, weekly fresh sheets and full apartment cleaning (including the dishes!). It's GREAT!

It's a very new apartment on the 11th floor. I love it so much! It's also been a bonus because the amount we are paying affords us extra help from them... for example Ana from Contact Chile even made my doctors appointment for me. :D

This is our apartment block. Strangely enough I took this photo one day when we were wandering around the city... before we even knew the apartment was for rent. I just thought it looked like an interesting and cool building. Little did I know I'd be living there within the week!

Hotel Paradiso...

So we pulled up at this building:

It actually looks kind of quaint from the outside.
